Formed in 1994, the Helpmann Academy is a unique collaborative partnership between the major tertiary arts training establishments in South Australia, unifying the skills and resources of the state's universities and TAFE SA. Named in honour of South Australia’s iconic actor and dancer, Sir Robert Helpmann, the Academy was established to maximise opportunities for professional development to assist arts students make the transition form study to professional practice. Sir Robert Helpmann was born in Mount Gambier on 9 April 1909. Throughout his long and illustrious career, Helpmann made a significant contribution to the arts in Australia and around the world as an actor, dancer, producer and director.
